The Crisis of America’s Crumbling Infrastructure

| Crumbling Water Pipe |
The nation's drinking water system is so troubled, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave it a grade of D minus, in its 2009 Report Card of America's Infrastructure. Here are just a few facts about the U.S. water infrastructure:
- States with largest 20-year needs: California, New York and Texas
- Systems serving 100,000-plus: 30 percent of pipes are between 40 and 80 years old
- Leaking pipes = 7 billion gallons wasted water daily
- Dripping faucet once per second: 2,700 gallons per year
- Total cost to fix U.S. water systems: $334.8 billion over 20 years
- Yearly U.S. water main breaks: 240,000
- Every time there is a break in the system bacteria enter the water supply.
- Sources: American Society of Civil Engineers, EPA
Municipal water systems can:
- Fail
- Break down
- Be tampered with (al Qaeda documents show dams and water systems)
- Become contaminated (recent event in Portland)
